How does Intense Pulsed Light therapy work for the treatment of acne?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy involves the use of a combination of blue light and red light of specific wavelength applied for a spcified duration to treat mild to moderately inflammatory acne.

Intense Pulsed Light (
IPL) devices use flash lamps that produce high intensity pulsed light (red and blue) of a determined wavelength that can traget specific cells of the skin.

When red and blue light is absorbed by pigmented cells of the skin called chromatophores it activates the production of a chemical substance called porphyrins.

Porphyrins inhibit the growth of  the acne casuing bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) and damages the blood vessels that suppy blood to the oil glands (sebaceous glands). When this happens the supply of nutrients is cut off and the oil glands reduce in size and oil production also reduces.

Reduction in the amount of oil being produced by the oil glands and the inhibition of the growth of the acne causing bacteria both help in the treatment of acne.
